Slimming World, Asperger Syndrome and ADHD


Welcome to Slimming World

Welcome to Slimming World. My name is Naomi Ferris and I am the Warrenpoint Consultant. My group runs on a Wednesday at 7pm. Slimming World groups are open 52 weeks a year and we make sure that our groups always are open even if we have to change the day.

The Slimming World plan is very different to other 'diet' plans. We encourage our members to eat plenty of fruit and veg, in fact all food groups so to have variety in their meals and to round out their diet to make it healthy.

The Slimming World plan is made up of three steps:

  1. Free foods: Eat as much of these foods as you like from the choices for each day. If you want a green day then eat freely of the free green choices and the same goes for the original day.
  2. Healthy extras: Have up to two A choices, this is to ensure you get the required daily amount of calcium. You may also have 2 B choices, this ensures you get the required amount of fibre and minerals each day.
  3. Choose to syn a little: Have between 5 and 15 syns a day. A glass of wine is about 6 syns and a 1/4 pint of granule gravy is 2 1/2 syns. Its your choice whether to have syns or not.

Think choicepower rather than willpower. When you make an informed choice to eat something whether it be a fattening food or not, you know that the responsibility lies with you if you gain or maintain. We always say to people to keep a food diary so they know exactly what they have eaten and it means then members can keep an eye on how many healthy extras or syns they are having. No food is banned, if you want crisps or a glass of wine, you go right ahead but just make sure it fits in with your food optimising.

If you follow the plan, fill in your food diary and attend image therapy for the first four full weeks but do not lose weight....you get your money back. Fun in Group

At Slimming World we like our members to have fun in group. No-one wants to sit there and be bored just listening to other people's weight changes. So we play team fun tech. You get points for recipes, weight losses,  honesty about why you maintained or gained  and even points for helping other members. My members love the team fun tech in our group. They vie for points and are very quick to remind me if I forget!!

Image therapy is great. It can help members identify what their crisis areas are and how to avoid falling into the same traps. Can reassure members that they will keep losing if they food optimise. Sometimes members can get complacent and if they have had losses each week and think that they can maybe slack off a bit. Unfortunately food optimising doesn't work like that, you may lose weight for a few weeks but you will find that if you aren't careful the weight will creep back on. That is one of the reasons why we say to people to attend each week. If you don't you may think that you have a week to catch up so can have a few extra treats without realising that those extra treats may signal the start of you going way off track.

Commitment

Slimming World is not a 'pay, weigh and go' organisation. Studies have shown that members who stay to image therapy lose on average three times more weight than those who pay, weigh and go. There is more motivation to keep trying to lose weight when you hear other member's successes. At group there are meal suggestions, recipes and lots of hints and tips. Let's face it, if you paid for a course of salsa lessons, you wouldn't just sign in and leave would you? You would want your money's worth so would stay to learn how to do the salsa steps. The same with Slimming World, you learn each week about healthy eating that enables you to lose weight. So do stay to group, give yourself that hour.

The group normally lasts an hour though your first group will last for about an hour and a half as the plan needs to be totally explained to each group of new members.

Here is a suggested meal plan for a green day:

Breakfast - Omelette made with three eggs, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes and pepper to taste. Finish with a few pieces of fruit.

Lunch - Jacket potato smothered in beans with a large side salad. Have a very low fat yoghurt like Shape Danone 0.1% fat.

Dinner - Spaghetti bolognaise, make sauce with tomatoes, onions, and 85g of mince (or use quorn mince whcih is free on green). Have unlimited spaghetti. Fruit for afters with fromage frais poured over.

Snacks - 1 Hifi bar (healthy extra B choice) unlimited fruit and very low fat dairy products. Diet drinks, tea and coffee, 350ml skimmed milk. Drink 2 litres of water.
